Yes, you can sell ebooks online – this article will tell you how!

The usual mistake when people want to sell ebooks, is to assume that all they have to do is create the ebook and list it somewhere and they will get lots of sales. Unfortunately, that will rarely get many sales.

In reality, creating and listing the ebook(s) is only a small part of what’s needed. After that (or sometimes before), what makes the real difference to sales, is effective marketing and promotion. This article will tell you how to do that, so your ebook really sells.

While ebooks can certainly sell well if everything is done effectively, sometimes the same content can sell even more effectively, for ten times the price in another format such as an online course of video modules. See my article “How to Write an Ebook and Make Money” for details.

Optimise your ebook for more sales

There are many things you can do to improve your ebook before you begin other marketing activities. It is worth doing the best you can at this stage, else your other marketing and promotions won’t work as well as they could.

For it to be worth promoting your ebook, you need to do very best you can in terms of quality. This applies to the writing, but also to many other aspects of your ebook.

Understand that your book title is a headline. On the average, five times as many people read the title as read the sub-title. So learn about writing the most effective headline you can and test different options, since the title can be the single biggest factor in selling your ebook effectively.

A simple Google Ads test can easily tell you which potential book title is actually more popular with people. For example, Tim Ferriss, the author of “Four Hour Work Week”, spent $200 and found a much better book title than the one he was planning to use, (and started building a mailing-list at the same time).

Or for free, ask people on a suitable forum or FaceBook Group which title they’d be most likely to buy.

Your book cover is also a vital element of marketing. It should be clear, professional and outstanding. For selling on Amazon, it is one of the most important factors, since it is the only thing people will see when they are skimming through the listings.

Editing is also vital, especially if your book is going to be listed on Amazon or other book selling platforms. To get good reviews, everything must be correctly edited, and good reviews are a very important factor for sales.

Pricing is also an important factor in ebook sales.

A general guide is to look at what others are doing in the same genre and format, and do something similar. If you are unknown, it can sometimes help to start at a slightly lower price than others, then increase your prices as you get known.

If your ebook is about practical information, and is high quality, it can often work well to price yourself higher than most competitors, as that will suggest that your information is of more value (especially if you can help suggest that with your book title).

When people are looking for a real solution to their problems, or a real method of getting what they really want, they are motivated to choose whatever seems most likely to help them for real, and higher price suggests better value.

General points on marketing and promoting your ebook

In general, for all promotional efforts, make sure you use a call to action wherever suitable (don’t just assume that people will know what to do and choose to do it. TELL them what to do, specifically).

Make sure you create a marketing plan, think through the ramifications of each step you are doing so you do things in the right order, get the timing right (for something like a book launch, for example) and prioritise what’s likely to be most effective.

A targeted, niche approach to promotion will see better results than a traditional “throw it at the wall and see what sticks” campaign.

Where to sell your ebook

There are a lot of places where ebooks can be sold. As with other methods, it will usually work better to focus on a few platforms and do them well (with effective marketing and promotion etc.), than to just list the ebook everywhere you can find and hope for the best.

Amazon is an obvious option for selling ebooks. For selling on Amazon, the cover (make sure it stands out and looks high quality) and choice of categories (choose at least one which has low competition) are important, as is your product rating by buyers who leave reviews. If you get enough good reviews then Amazon will promote your book more, for free.

The number of reviews during the initial week or so is very important, so it’s worth building a mailing-list (see below) and doing an effective book launch if you can. This can include booking professional reviewers (from websites, blogs etc. who review books like yours) beforehand to leave their review during the launch period, and doing a podcast tour, social-media promotions and other promotional activities before the launch, to build your mailing-list and make the launch as big as you can.

A launch is one time when lowering the price can be a good idea. List it on Amazon at the full price first, then once that is accepted, you can temporarily lower the price during a short launch period.

You can also sell ebooks on eBay, although there are strict limitations, so make sure you understand how it works before you make any mistakes.

For optimum results, plan your back-end (things you sell to the same people later) . . . for an effective info-product seller on Ebay, 80% of the profit might come from the back-end (i.e. things you sell to them later), so it can still work if your front-end product (what you sell on Ebay) is only breaking-even, or maybe even losing money, because what you are really doing is building a mailing-list of subscribers who you know are interested in a specific type of info-product.

The price-point on Ebay might be around a quarter of what you’d usually sell the ebook at elsewhere, but if your back-end works well, profit on the front-end doesn’t really matter. Research the typical sell-through percentage (the percentage of sales vs. no-sales, for completed listings) for similar ebooks, so you can estimate your profit or loss (knowing the listing cost). See what is working for others there, and do something similar.

Other places to sell ebooks include JVZoo and ClickBank, both of which have a lot of ebooks about online business, but plenty in other categories too. On those platforms, you can set an affiliate commission so that other people will sell your ebook for you, and you can announce the launch on places like MunchEye, and suitable FaceBook Groups.

Selling ebooks from your own website

The basic elements of a website are :-

• domain name (i.e. Yourwebsite.com)
• hosting (a location for the files which contain the data of your website, such as the text, images, videos etc.)
• an optional content management system (which makes it easy for you to make changes, add links, blog posts, images videos etc. I recommend WordPress)

I won’t go into details about all those here . . . if you want my recommendations, my guide “Easy Website Creation with WordPress.– Domain, hosting, & WordPress installation, optimization, and customization” is here (for only $1).

Think whether you should create your website focusing on “you the author”, about an ebook or ebook series, or focusing on the subject which your ebook or series is about.

The style and “look” of the website should fit the with your books are about. The easiest way to get some ideas on that is . . .

. . . have a look at top websites on the same topic (do a Google search and look at each relevant website from the results), and then do something similar. When you’ve created an initial version, ask experienced people for their opinions . . . for example ask on my FaceBook Group.

You can sell on your own site using PayPal or alternatives such as Stripe, Payoneer etc.

Look at some of the leading websites in your subject (Google your niche, and look at the websites on the top page), and take note of what they are selling and how they are doing it.

To sell products on your website, you will need sales-pages. You might also need one or more squeeze-pages (to build a mailing-list), and probably some blog article content for SEO.

Long sales-copy can often work well for selling information products to new visitors. See what other people are doing to sell similar products to yours, and do something similar (but never an exact copy of someone else’s content).

SEO

Whether you are selling your ebook(s) from your own website, or from another platform, the more visitors you get, the more likely you are to make sales. Yes, SEO can be applied to your listing on Amazon and on most other platforms.

“SEO” means “Search Engine Optimization”. Which means doing things so that Google (and other search engines) give you more free visitors (known as “organic traffic”) to your content.

SEO has the advantages of often being free, and producing increasing results over time from a constant amount of work. The disadvantages are that it can take a lot of work, and a lot of time (weeks at least) before you get significant results.

The #1 most important factor for SEO in 2020 is consistently posting high quality, relevant content. Although the number of words is not actually factor (despite many SEO “experts” claiming that it is), what matters is having a lot of relevant expert phrases and related context on your web-page, and a lot of words are likely to be necessary to achieve that. Most of your pages should have at least 500 words, and your in-depth articles should have typically over 2,000 words on a page.

Your articles can talk about the problems your services solve, or other content which someone who needs your ebooks would be interested in.

The most important factor for off-page SEO (things you do outside your website) is to only build high Domain-authority links to your site from related topics, and make them look as natural as possible in terms of how quickly you build them, which pages they link to etc.

Social-media marketing

Effective social-media activity is a must for anyone who wants to sell more ebooks.

Remember that people go to social media to be entertained and find interesting content, they don’t usually go there to buy things (although Pinterest can be an exception). So give them what they are looking for . . . interesting content that they will want to Share, such as your blog posts, videos, etc.

You should create your own FaceBook Page for either yourself as an author, or for a specific ebook series or collection of related ebooks, whichever makes most sense (you can have multiple Pages).

You could also create and grow your own FaceBook Group for people who are likely to want to read your ebook. One way of getting members to your Group is to post high-quality informative content on relevant, but non-competitive Groups, with a link there to your own Group.

Other social-media includes Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest. Each has different demographics, so do some research to see which is the best fit for your ebook topic. See how similar ebooks are being promoted on your chosen platforms, and do something like that (but better!).

Other ebook sales, marketing and promotion approaches

Selling on forums and discussion boards can be effective, but only if done correctly. Do your research, have a look at what other people are doing successfully to sell on each specific forum, and be willing to take your time and do your ground-work before trying to sell anything.

One common way to sell, which is allowed on most forums (although there are various rules you need to check, on each) is including a link in your signature on that forum.

Paid ads can be used to promote an ebook. If you are considering paid ads (such as Google ads, FaceBook ads etc.) it might be better to use them to build a mailing-list by giving them something of value first, then posting information so they know, like and trust you, before you tell them where they can buy your ebook. That is likely to be a more cost-effective strategy, long-term.

Paid Memberships.

This can be a great way to obtain a recurring income (i.e. you get paid every month) from a bunch of related ebooks (or other content).

A membership site might have a subscription fee of $19.95 or $29.95 per month.

These can be hugely profitable if done well, for example Lynda.com made 3 million a month and sold for over a billion dollars.

To keep members eager to continue paying the subscription fee, you need to add new content regularly (you can help this process by announcing up-coming content before it is ready).

Do some research on what other similar paid memberships are charging, so you know what to charge. Make sure you add a decent amount of content before you start selling the membership, so that initial members will be happy to continue to pay their membership.

Building a mailing-list

A great way you can promote your ebooks more effectively is to build a mailing-list of people who might be interested in buying them. Offer them something of value for free, in exchange for their email address.

A “Squeeze-page” is the page, or area on a web-page, where you have your list sign-up Form. It is also known as an opt-in form.

There are many different mailing-list management systems you can choose from. At the time of writing MailChimp, one of the best known mailing-list management systems, and is free for up to 2000 list members. An alternative is BuilderAll, which also gives you web-hosting, design, plus a lot of other tools, all for a small monthly payment.

Post interesting information to your mailing-list regularly, so your subscribers know, like and trust you, which makes them much more likely to buy your ebooks when you promote them to your list.

This article is about books on how to make money, but it also includes a lot more than that, such as . . .

• why some of the best ways of becoming wealthy cannot be learned well from a printed book,
• why there are better ways of learning in addition to books,
• how to read with a clear purpose,
• And lots more.

First, let’s start with some definitions:

How money is made.

Business is the activity of making money.

It involves buying and selling products or services.

Money is a medium of exchange for transactions between buyer and seller.

In the US currently, 7.9% of the population own a business, with most other people working for someone else’s business (or government institutions etc.). Some people do both.

The big difference between working for a business (i.e. having a job) and owning a business is the degree of risk and reward:

• having a job is low risk, with relatively low reward.
• owning a business is higher risk, but the potential rewards are very much bigger.

How to make money – general learning.

If you want to learn how to make more money, I recommend that you start with a broad education on relevant subjects, so you understand basic concepts such as what money is, how it works, economics and business etc.

Then you can narrow your research as you discover which parts of the subject you are most interested in learning more about, and/or most relevant to your goals (see below).

Wikipedia as a an obvious starting point for learning about general subjects related to making money. Here are some of the relevant topic categories . . . learn a bit about each, so you have a basic understanding of the different subjects:

• ECONOMY is the top-most category, with many sub-categories including . . .

    • trade
  • money
    • finance
    • cash
  • wealth
    • income
    • standard of living

And here are a couple of book recommendations for general learning about how to make money.

The first is one of the most famous books on the subject:

Rich Dad Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!

Published more than 20 years ago, it’s still one of the classics, and an essential read for anyone interested in understanding how to make money more effectively and efficiently.

I recommend reading the whole series, in order.

And the other is also well-known . . . a fascinating book on “popular economics”:

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything – by Steven D. Levitt

This fascinating book explores how incentives really work, with lots of really interesting examples.

Should help you understand how things really work in the world of business and money, which most people don’t have any clue about.

Read about what will help you make money most effectively.

Once you’ve done some general reading about broad aspects of the topics on Wikipedia (or other places such as other websites or a local library), I recommend you take the time to define your current situation, and your short-term and long-term goals.

Write down everything relevant, including your experience, skills, interests, savings, needs, etc. Don’t censor yourself initially, just brain-storm it all out . . . you can organise it later.

It can be good to have both short-term goals and long-term goals.

Long-term goals might be 7-year aims, or whatever feels right to you. Make them big enough to excite you, but not too big so they feel impossible. An example of doing this is the book “Seven Years to Seven Figures: The Fast-Track Plan to Becoming a Millionaire – by Michael Masterson“, where the author chose 7 years and 7 figures, because that was exciting but realistic to people he talked to.

You might have obvious short-term financial goals, such as getting free from debt or increasing your income soon. If not, then look at your long-term financial goals, think through the different things you might need to do in order to achieve those, and the different stages of the process, and there . . . you have some short-term goals!

For your long-term goals, you are likely to need to start by learning more about how to achieve them (unless you already know what you need to do and just haven’t done it yet, see below for more on that). You might need to research several different possibilities, and then, once you know more about each, narrow down your research and actions until you are succeeding.

Your short-term, daily and weekly goals, must be in terms of your own actions.

The reason is that you can choose to commit to doing things yourself, but if you’d defined goals in terms of what other people will do, then those are outside your control.

Choosing to commit to actions is a good thing to do, and will help you get results. But don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t get everything done as you planned . . . have a look at the reasons why and adjust your planning accordingly (or learn more about how to do those actions more efficiently).

Now you’ve thought about what you need to learn more about, in order to make more money, you can read with a purpose, even if the initial purpose is to discover what would be best to focus on.

The Millionaire Maker: Act, Think, and Make Money the Way the Wealthy Do – by Loral Langemeier.

She takes ordinary people and gets them making changes in their lives which result in much more wealth.

Definitely a good book to read if you want to become richer!

Many of the principles it details are timeless, while others have been improved upon since it was written. For example EFT (“Tapping”) is much more effective than visualising success (which can actually decrease motivation).

The Richest Man in Babylon – by George S. Clason

This well-known classic illustrates the concept of intelligently investing money to build wealth.

Definitely a vital concept to understand and use in practice!

Don’t believe everything you read!

Since it was discovered that there are some laws of physics which are precisely definable and will work reliably every time, people tried to find similar “laws” for other areas. People tend to believe that the theories in areas like economics or phsychology are similarly precise and reliable, but the reality is very far from that.

For example economics is based on the idea that everyone makes perfect decisions 100% of the time, and psychology is based on the idea that humans can only be imperfect (they don’t even have a description of what a human capable of perfect decisions might look like). So, at the very least, if one of those theories is correct, then the other one fundamentally is not. Yet many people believe that both are “scientific fact” (which is a nonsense statement, anyway).

If you read a bunch of books, and really think what they are saying, it also becomes very evident that for almost every theory (presented as “established fact”), you can usually find another equally firmly espoused theory that says pretty much the opposite.

For example . . . the idea that everyone who ever succeeds at anything always has a clear plan beforehand, is presented in many books. It’s sometimes justified by long-term experiments that appear to “prove” exactly that.

And then you read in one of the “good to great” series (see above) that having a plan is irrelevant, and that some huge successes, such as McCafee, had no plan at all when they started, and even no clue what kind of industry they might be in.

Also, some of the financial “myth-busting” books state as “fact” theories which are often more incorrect than the supposed “myths”. And we have all experienced the real results of what happens when a government uses a “proven economic theory” (which just happens to make them and their friends richer at the expense of everyone else, then comes close to crashing the whole economic system).

So learn from what others are saying, but don’t believe everything. Keep an open mind.

Ultimately what matters, especially in an area such as making money, is whether the actions you take actually result in money being made, or not.

It can help to learn from people who have actually succeeded using the exact systems they teach.

And, of course, looking at the background data can help, such as when a famous politician says how successful he is because he is worth $8 billion, then you read that his father actually left him $16 billion, so what he’s actually done is waste half of it

What matters is the results YOU get with your actions. The “lean startup” philosophy can help . . . where you start with some assumptions and test them in practice (using the minimum viable product) and see what the real-world results are, and adjust from there.

This is often a more effective route to financial success than trying to understand everything “perfectly” before you start (which, given very imperfect, contradictory and rapidly-changing data, is a never-ending task). One of the best ways to do this is in online business, where testing can be rapid and cheap or even free (see below for more details).

Even better ways of learning how to make money:

Do you know how to learn nine times more effectively than reading?

Different people will respond differently, due to whether they are mostly auditory, mostly visual or mostly kinesthetic, as well as other factors, but doing something will always result in better learning than just reading about it.

And teaching others gets you thinking about it from other perspectives which gives an even deeper learning experience.

So while attending lectures, reading and watching webinars and videos can be a good start, once you’ve chosen a focus, you need to take some action as early as possible in the process, so you get feedback from the real world. If things didn’t go as you expected, it’s a good idea to get involved in discussions with others, ask experts, find out what results other people are getting doing similar things etc. so you can adjust your systems and improve your results.

A picture can be worth a thousand words

As you saw in the section above, it’s sometimes much quicker and clearer to show something using an image, than to explain the same thing in words.

Why, for some ways to make money, books are not the best source:

For example . . . if you want to learn about online business, while there are certainly things you can learn from books, such as general points about a small business (from books such as “the Emyth Revisited”, see above), or be inspired by ideas from books such as “the 4-hour Work Week” (see above). But to really get into practical details of implementing internet business systems effectively, books are not the place to look.

Two of the main reasons for this are:

• The book creation and promotion cycle for printed books in stores is too slow for the rapidly-changing online world
• If you’re implementing a system online, using online promotions etc. then the obvious place you’re going to talk about it is . . . online.

Give yourself the best chance of becoming wealthy:

As is made clear by “Rich Dad Poor Dad”, “Millionairemaker” and many other books, by far the best chance of becoming genuinely wealthy is to start your own business.

The many advantages of an online business make it the best choice for most people. Whether as a part-time “side-hustle” which can grow to earn a lot more than your main job, or your full-time focus, internet businesses are making great profits for a lot of people these days.

I’ve explained above why learning about things like online business is best done online, although some of the general business principles can be learned from books.

Big advantages of an online business include:

• low or zero start-up costs
• straight-forward and relatively rapid testing
• easy up-scaling once a reliably profitable system has been tested
• and many more

Yes, it is certainly possible to write an ebook and make money, but only if you do it the right way.

This article tells you how.

Examples of results from selling information products:

While this article is about how to make money writing an ebook, I’m using the phrase “information products”, rather than ebooks in this article . . . I’ll make it clear why, in just a moment.

First some examples of results from people selling information products effectively . . .

So, you can see that a LOT of profit is being made in the information-selling business these days, from selling ebooks and information in other formats.

Worthwhile results are definitely possible. Keep reading to learn more (and you can also get my free guide, at the end of this article).

Why you shouldn’t start with a product idea.

One of the most common mistakes in building an information product empire, is starting with a product idea and then trying to persuade people to buy it.

It is very much better to start with a significant problem or desire that a well-defined group of passionate people really care about.

That makes it relatively easy to create an effective product and to market it well.

People are not really looking for random “information” . . . what they really want is a real solution to their problems, or a practical way to get what they most want.

If you give it to them, marketing will be a lot easier, and it’s marketing which really determines how much profit you’ll make (see below for more on that).

How are you going to sell your information product?

Another very common mistake with information products is to assume that all you have to do is to create the product, list it somewhere and you’ll make a fortune.

In reality, you’ll probably make little or nothing without an effective sales strategy and successful promotions.

So this is why I am talking about sales before I get to creating the product. And I recommend you think about things in this order too . . . you shouldn’t start making the product, or even decide what format(s) it should be in, until you know how you’re going to do the sales and marketing part of the process.

Note that I’ve often used the phrase “information products” rather than ebooks . . . the reason is that if you think in terms of information products there are many more options than if you think only in terms of ebooks.

I talked about different types of products in the “examples” section of this article, above. One of them was books being sold on Amazon (as ebooks, printed books, audio-books etc.). Another was a membership subscription, and online courses are yet another type of product.

Different formats have different perceived value. For example, an ebook can rarely sell for more than $67, but the exact same information could be made into an online course of video modules, and sold, by webinar, for $2,000 or more.

To sell at higher prices, the information must be high quality, and the methods must be well proven with lots of testimonials, but even with all that, an ebook is still unlikely to sell for more than $67. And by the way, the examples above which made the most profits were both high-quality online video courses, sold by webinar.

Some ebooks sell in different formats, such as Kindle, paperback, and audio-book (with hard-back being a lot less popular these days), each at a different price. And the same information can sometimes be sold as a PDF on CD-ROM for a higher price than any of the other options.

It makes sense to think through the whole system of the information product, the sales and marketing format(s), and promotion, before you start making it, so that the creation process is optimised for what you need to do with it.

It is sometimes possible to create different versions, such as a high-quality course, a much shorter ebook version, a 1-page cheat-sheet, and up-sells such as mentoring and coaching. Some people have grown a 6-figure coaching business by creating and promoting just one ebook, so up-sells can be very well worth considering as part of your plans.

Also keep in mind that bigger is not necessarily better with information products . . . for example a 1-page cheat-sheet might get better results for a lead-magnet (i.e. a free gift which people are willing to give their email address to download), than a long ebook. So think what you’re going to be doing with the information, before you start creating it.

There are a lot of places where information-products can be sold, including digital selling platforms such as Amazon, JVZoo, Clickbank and others, selling downloads or membership from your own website, and various other platforms for different formats.

How to create information products

As well as creating information from scratch yourself (either from your own knowledge and experience, or by doing the necessary research), it is also possible to buy ready-made information products, or even get other people do to most of the product-creation for you.

For example, you can create a valuable information-product by interviewing several experts on a topic, or putting together existing expert content (with their permission, of course).

There is a lot of information, in various formats, which you can buy (or get for free) to sell.

One type of content is called “PLR” (Public Label Rights), which gives you the right to resell the information in various ways. Different PLR content will have different resell rights, so make sure you read the rights and use them honestly.

To find this type of content, just Google “PLR” and the subject you want to find the information on. You’ll also find some PLR content for sale on sites like JVZoo, ClickBank etc.

Another approach to obtaining information content to sell would be to pay someone to create it for you. This might cost a little more initially, but you can be much more specific about what you want, and be sure that your content is unique.

For example, there are a lot of experts on Fiverr (and other outsource sites) . . . you could pay them to create content on their subject of expertise. Or they might already have some content which they can easily adapt for your needs.

While it’s easy enough to make a copy of the best articles on any subject (just do a Google search) and re-write and re-organise them into original content, if you don’t want to do the research and writing yourself, pay someone on an outsource site to do the research and create new content for you.

Or get some free PLR articles on a topic, and pay someone to re-write and re-organise them and make a video course from the content (with topics that change a lot it’s usually best to also research current information on each subject, so that your content is up-to-date).

Pricing

Selling at a higher price than your competition can sometimes work better than selling at a lower price.

A higher price suggests more value, and a lot of people want the best value they can get rather than cheapness. This is particularly true for content that people want to learn something useful from (rather than just be entertained), because if they want to learn, it makes sense to learn from the best information available, rather than something where the low price suggests lower quality information.

One exception is that it can work to sell a book at a low price (or free) as a lead-generator, i.e. to get people to join your mailing-list. For example, you could sell a short version of part of an ebook or course cheaply, get lots of email addresses, to use to help you launch a full-priced version. Even giving people the book in exchange for a review can help a lot, as it boosts your author rating, and that will help with sales on a platform such as Amazon.

Another exception is a book launch . . . it can work well to set up the book at $9.99 on Amazon, then lower the price to 99 cents for a 7-day launch period, after which the price goes back up again.

An alternative strategy is to test both higher and lower prices, with different packages (or bonuses etc.) or even just re-title the same product and test see which works better.

It is usually good to test and optimise pricing, rather than just guessing.

Promotion for ebooks and information products

As I mentioned above, one of the biggest mistakes beginners make with information products, is to think that all that needs to be done is to create the product and list it somewhere for sale.

In reality, it usually takes a lot of marketing and promotion to get sales.

Often it requires a long-term view to succeed, with some initial money or hard work needed to get the first sales, and then things can get easier as reviews and testimonials build, and you optimise your methods.

For example, for books sold on Amazon in any format, getting the first positive reviews is essential, and once you’ve got enough of those, Amazon will promote your book themselves so you get more sales with no more effort (although it might well be worth you doing additional promotions for even better results).

Or for a webinar, it might take some initial investment to test and optimise your webinar with paid traffic (such as FaceBook or YouTube ads), but when you are getting good sales statistics, you can then talk to a webinar Joint-venture broker, who can get your webinar promoted by lots of owners of big email lists, for affiliate commissions.

The main methods of promoting your information products are:

• SEO.
• Social-media marketing.
• Paid ads.

And for any promotional method, it can be more cost-effective, especially in the long-term, to focus on building an email-list, rather than selling directly.

SEO

. . . means “Search Engine Optimization”. Which is doing things so that Google (and other search engines) give you more free visitors (known as “organic traffic”) to your content.

SEO has the advantages of often being free, and of producing increasing results over time from a constant amount of work.

The #1 most important factor for SEO in 2020 is consistently posting high quality, relevant content.

Although the number of words is not actually factor (despite many SEO “experts” claiming that it is), what matters is having a lot of relevant expert phrases and related context on your web-page, and a lot of words are likely to be necessary to achieve that. Most of your pages should have at least 500 words, and your in-depth articles should have typically over 2,000 words on a page.

You can find the relevant expert phrases for your topic by looking at relevant pages in Wikipedia. Relevance and focus are major factors for SEO effeciveness.

A great way of writing lots of content which is great for SEO, is to create a blog on the topic(s) which your information-products are about. For example, you could write an article about the biggest problem in that niche, and then explain how your information product solves that problem better than any other option.

The most important factor for off-page SEO (things you do outside your website) is to only build links from high Domain-authority sites to your site, and only from content on related topics. You need to make them look as natural as possible in terms of how quickly you build them, which pages they link to, anchor-text etc. To get full details on all of this . . .

Social-media marketing

. . . can be used effectively to promote your information-products (and your other related content such as blog posts).

Some channels might include areas where you can sell directly, but some specifically prohibit affiliate links or links direct to a sales-page, so it’s more common to use social-media to get interested visitors to content such as articles, free videos or a free gifts on your website, where you encourage people to subscribe to your mailing-list, and only after that to tell them about products they can buy.

Popular content channels include YouTube, Facebook (where you can create a Page and a Group on the topics of your information products), Pinterest, and Instagram. Ask your potential customers which channels they use, and put your content there.

Competitions can be a great tool to use on social-media, especially with info-products where it’s easy to put together a high-value package as the prize.

Make sure you follow the rules about competitions and contests for the platform(s) you are using. It’s usually possible to encourage people to Share your competition, and it can “go viral” if you do everything right. You should also try to get anyone who wants to participate to give their email address, such as by saying that the winner(s) will be announced by email only (so it can be a great list-building method).

Paid ads.

These include Google ads (which includes YouTube ads), FaceBook ads, Bing ads and banner ads. They can be used effectively with some of the different sales approaches, including selling on your own website or building a mailing-list.

One of the most important concepts to understand with paid ads (or any form of paid traffic), is the “rule of thumb” that you have to spend 3 times the payout before you know if your funnel is profitable or not. This is because random events in the real world are far more clustered than people imagine.

For example I’ve had businesses with a $10k product buy $50 of leads and say “this is not working” . . . they refuse to understand how these things really work, and so just lose money and go on to something else.

Re-targeting (getting more ads in front of people who show an interest in your content) can be applied to your own funnels (and will typically improve your results), and to other people’s websites using Repixel.

Hi, this is Chris, welcome to this video, which will tell you about the 3 biggest mistakes that newbies make when trying to learn how to make money online.

Did you know that an estimated 98% of newbies fail to make any decent money online? Yet there are many people making more than a million a year using simple online business models.

Why is there such a big difference between those who fail, and those who succeed?

Newbies mistake #1:

. . . not considering their own personality and situation.

The result of this is that they try lots of different money-making systems, without understanding that most of them, while they might make great profits for a few people, are really not suitable for them and don’t give them a real chance to make money.

For example, there are some great online businesses like service agencies (SEO etc.), which can make a lot of money relatively quickly, BUT they require directly selling something to another person. For an extrovert who’s a natural born salesperson and can persuade anyone to do anything, they can be a great way to make good money fast. Some people can learn how to sell with appropriate training, but for a lot of introverts, no amount of training or experience will make them into an effective sales-person, and the methods just won’t work.

Another example is high-ticket affiliate products, using paid traffic. They can be great IF you have the knowledge and investment to make it work. Most cheap courses on such things won’t tell you that a realistic test is 3 times the payout, for EACH test . . . change one word or setting and that’s a new test. So, while it may sound like the best idea to be selling an affiliate product where you get a ten thousand dollar payout, unless you’ve got 30k per test, you won’t know whether what you’re doing is profitable or not. So for someone with a limited budget, that would be a waste of time, or they’ll try sending tiny amounts of traffic for a few weeks, using free methods, then think “it doesn’t work”, where as in reality, with that traffic volume, they wouldn’t know whether they were succeeding or not for several years of daily work.

So that’s why I recommend starting with a really honest look at your own personal limitations and situation. What can you do easily? What do you find challenging? How much time can you invest? How much money can you realistically invest?

Doing that would usually mean that you can ignore most methods, since they won’t be a good fit for you.

Then you can focus on testing just a few systems that are a good match for your own personality and situation, and have a much better chance of succeeding.

That’s an immediate cure for what is by far biggest problem for internet marketing newbies . . . and that is . . .

Newbies Mistake #2:

. . . information Overwhelm

This is the biggest complaint your will hear newbies talking about on forums about internet marketing . . . they have found 20 amazing methods of making money rapidly, and are confused as to which of them is “best”.

Part of the solution for that is what I’ve already covered . . . be really honest about yourself and your situation, and think carefully about each potential work from home system and what it really requires, and then most of them you can ignore.

But there’s another huge problem, which is not so often talked about, which ruins many people’s chances of ever succeeding with an online business, and that is . . .

Newbies Mistake #3:

. . . learning from cheap courses, which give false information.

There are a LOT of cheap online money-making courses out there, but unfortunately, the majority of them are giving so-called “methods”, which do not actually work if you try them.

I know this for myself, having even been used, more than once, as the example of how to do the method “perfectly”, by creators of cheap courses, but I still lost money. I gradually began to see that there were clues to why I wasn’t making money . . . things like the course-creators list of websites they claimed to use every day, some of which had been down for years, and some didn’t do anything like they said. And instructions like how to increase your traffic by paying someone on Fiverr to submit your website RSS feed to 400 sites, which actually LOSES you most of your traffic, if you actually do it.

Then I found some methods by these kinds of sellers, on how to make money online, such as . . . you buy someone else’s cheap course, re-write it in your own words and sell it as your own, without any real tests or even real understanding of the basics of that method.

So I got an understanding of why a lot of these cheap courses are a waste of time and money.

But there is an alternative, which might sound counter-intuitive at first . . . instead of buying endless cheap courses which don’t work, you can learn from real online millionaires, for FREE!!

Why not learn from the best?

. . . instead of buying cheap courses, which are often just re-wordings of someone else’s cheap course that doesn’t really work, why not learn from people who are making big money online, for real?

And, if you don’t know already, it’s very easy to do that . . . just join a mailing-list (like mine, below)which gives info about really good webinars, by the REAL experts. You can learn a LOT from the free info without ever spending anything, then if you are ready to invest in one of the courses they mention, you have a good chance that it’s genuine information, and that you’ll get real help if you need it, all of which gives you a much better chance to succeed.

They just use real proofs and examples. Some even show you the screen of websites where they make a significant profit during the time the webinar is playing!

I know this seems counter-intuitive at first glance . . . most people would assume that something you pay for is always going to be better than something you get for free.

But in making money online, there are 3 very good reasons why free training is vastly better than most cheap courses.

Reason #1. The information in free training webinars is genuine.

Sadly, a lot of the people creating cheap products and courses about making money online are not giving genuine information.

I’ve seen some of them recommending just buying someone else’s cheap product, re-writing it in your own words, and selling it as your own “real method”.

In the past I’ve made the mistake of buying brand new internet marketing products, then, when reading through the method, found lists of “resources I use every day to make money“, some of which have ceased to exist years ago and others which don’t do anything like the author says they do.

I’ve followed low-cost methods which the author obviously hasn’t tried at all, such as paying someone on Fiverr to submit your website RSS feed to 300 places, to “boost your traffic” . . . all of us on the forum for that method, found that doing so actually reduced our traffic, losing us 75% of the traffic we’d built up before doing that (the course-creator stopped communicating when we talked about these results and closed the forum shortly after).

After a while, it becomes obvious that most people selling cheap products about making money on the internet, are not giving real information. They’re not really doing the method themselves.

On the other hand, it’s often easy to find the online activities of the real experts who give free training, and I’ve seen for myself that they are actually doing what they teach, and getting great results. While there certainly are a few cheap products which are genuine, most are sadly far from it.

Some courses actually recommend using fake social proof (positive quotes from non-existent “buyers”) to sell more cheap courses that don’t really work.

Some low-cost courses have “proof” that is either faked, or really doesn’t add up when you think about it. For example, one cheap product I bought in the past about domain flipping . . . the domain he bought was valued at $65,000 and sold for $27. While he might possibly have bought that domain for less than $27, finding such an unusually valuable domain by doing what he recommended (searching recently expired domains) would be very time-consuming to do consistently. And the domain purchase that he said would be “99 cents per domain, forever” actually turned out to be over $11 after the first domain purchase (since the discount vouchers he recommended would no longer work after I’d bought one domain). So that’s $16 profit (less listing fees and domain purchase), for maybe 10 hours work searching expired domains. Definitely not a worthwhile business method in my opinion!

The real experts don’t need to do any of this, because they are making real money (see below), and getting real comments from others who they are teaching to do the same. They just use real proofs and examples. Some even show you the screen of websites where they make a significant profit during the time the webinar is playing!

The secret is that creating a genuine webinar, which gives real, useful free information first, will make them much more in sales than selling a cheap course. After the free information, most webinars will offer the attendee an opportunity to get results more easily and quickly, by purchasing the expert’s course (which is often “high ticket”, i.e. $500, to $5k or even more).

But that doesn’t prevent you learning a LOT from all the free information in webinars by successful experts. You can attend a whole bunch of different webinars, taking notes, learning from each one, without ever needing to spend a penny (I did that for about 2 years, before I bought even one course from a webinar)!

Most of the experts who give the free training calls that I’m talking about here, have made many millions online. (I’ll give you instant access to an ongoing series of free online profit training by real experts, at the end of this article).They are hugely successful at online profit generation, and have made a lot of real money doing the exact methods that they are talking about.

One of the experts who’s webinar I can get you access to (see below) has made over $140 million in his businesses. It’s not difficult to pay attention to what he’s saying on a few of his training courses (as I have done) and find examples of him actually doing the business methods he teaches, and to see him getting great results in the real world.

As you can tell from the mistakes I mentioned above, I have plenty of experience with cheap courses that just don’t work in practice.
